Agent workforce
An agent workforce is a set of AI agents that together cover the operational functions a company would otherwise hire for, each running a defined function under a human approval gate rather than acting as a general assistant.
The word workforce describes the coverage, not the agents. It means the set is scoped by function — sales and outbound, customer support, marketing and content, back-office operations — rather than by task. A single agent that answers questions is a tool; a set that covers what a company needs done every day is a workforce.
Two things distinguish an agent workforce from general automation. It has a place to work: an application holding customers, orders and records, so output becomes company state rather than loose activity. And it has a boundary: decisions that are binding, irreversible or above a spend threshold stop and wait for a person.
The term does not imply employment, and careful use avoids the surrounding vocabulary — hires, teammates, digital employees. Agents run functions. They do not exercise judgment or hold accountability, and describing them as staff sets an expectation the software will not meet.
